Bentley ranks amongst the famous makes in history. Founded by W.O.Bentley in 1919, his cars were most successful in racing, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans no less than 5 times. The Great Depression and the fading support by its financier Woolf Barnato led to the end of the W.O. period in 1931, when the company was taken over by its rival Rolls-Royce and production moved to Derby. After World War II, the Rolls-Royce plant was moved from Derby to Crewe. Although in the process of industrialisation, Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars were made in the new "Standard Steel" version (car totally built in house including coachwork), the more luxurious "Coachbuilt" version was still available to special offer. For the "Coachbuilt" version, the manufacturer built the "rolling chassis" but then commissioned the coachwork to an authorised coachbuilder, allowing the customer to choose from a variety of different coachwork designs.
From 1950 until 1959, all Bentley cars featured the 6-cylinder engine legendary from the Thirties, gradually upgraded to 4.5 litre, and 4.9 litre after 1959. No other engine offers the silence, smoothness and total absence of any vibration like the Bentley 6-cylinder engine. The subsequent Bentley V8 engine after 1959 was clearly stronger, but not nearly as refined.
Only Bentley (not Rolls-Royce) cars were optionally available with the "Continental" option, an upgrade featuring a more sporty suspension, a higher rear axle ratio and a rev counter instrument, suitable for long distance high-speed cruising. This "Continental" option made these large and elegant Bentley cars surprisingly sporty and nimble to drive. On the coachwork side, one particular model is a milestone in the history of Postwar Bentley cars – the S1 Continental Park Ward Coupé. For reasons never quite understood, the S1 Continental Park Ward handles infinitely better than its contemporaries by H.J.Mulliner, James Young, etc, which must have to do with the way that the bodies are attached to the chassis. Another quality makes the S1 Continental Park Ward unique – its outstanding coachwork design which is elegant yet very sporty.
This particular car, the S1 Continental Park Ward Fixed-Head Coupé chassis N°BC38LCH is very special for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is one of only 33 cars built with left hand drive (of which only some 10 examples were made with the small rear quarter window). Secondly, it was totally restored by foremost expert P. & A. Wood from 2005 until 2009, including a number of special upgrades such as secondary fuel pump system, auxiliary fan system and fully integrated air conditioning. No other Fifties grand touring coupé car offer performances and comfort quite like this car.

Jeep é uma marca registada atualmente em nome da Chrysler LLC Group. O termo jipe virou sinônimo de automóveis destinados ao uso fora de estrada, ou off road, normalmente com tração nas quatro rodas. A palavra jipe é um aportuguesamento do termo em inglês jeep, derivado da pronúncia em inglês da sigla GP, que significa general purpose ou "uso geral", embora essa não seja a origem da marca Jeep.

O veículo surgiu durante o esforço de guerra americano, no final dos anos 1930 e início dos 40, em que era necessário um veículo leve, com capacidade de superar terrenos difíceis e com obstáculos, e com capacidade para levar alguns homens e armamentos. Ao final da segunda guerra, a Willys requisitou o registro do nome Jeep.

O primeiro protótipo foi o Bantan BRC cuja traseira é semelhante às traseiras do Jeep Willys e do Jeep Ford, mas a frente é arredondada, bem de acordo com o design típico do final dos anos 1930.[carece de fontes] Está na mente coletiva que o primeiro Jeep foi o Willys MB ou simplesmente "42" (de 1942), mas isso é um erro. Segundo a Chrysler do Brasil, o nome Jeep deve-se ao personagem de histórias em quadrinhos chamado "Jeep". Em 16 de março de 1936 a personagem conhecido pelo nome de Eugene the Jeep foi criado pelo cartunista E. C. Segar para fazer companhia ao Popeye. Ele era do tamanho de um cachorro e nativo da África e capaz de passar para a quarta dimensão. Ele resolvia todos os problemas do Popeye e da Olivia Palito e sempre falava a verdade. Este personagem cativou o público e se tornou rapidamente popular. A ligação entre o nome Jeep e a tração 4×4 é creditado ao piloto de teste da Willys, Irvin Hausmann, que escolheu o nome para o seu veículo em 1940 durante testes para o exército americano. Até então eram referenciados por outros nomes como Bug, Blitz Buggy, Puddle Jumper, Peep ou Quad. O nome Jeep foi trazido a público por Katherine Hillyer no jornal Washington Daily News, em 16 de março de 1941, quando relatou que ao final de uma demonstração alguém da platéia perguntou a Hausmann como ele chamava aquele veículo e ele respondeu: "It’s a Jeep!", ou "É um Jeep!".[carece de fontes]

No Brasil, a Vemag produziu o Candango, entre 1958 e 1963, uma versão sob licença do DKW Munga. A Vemag tentou lançar esse veículo no Brasil denominando-o como Jeep DKW-Vemag, mas a Willys detinha os direitos sobre a denominação Jeep e daí surgiu o nome …

The production version of the GT-R debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, launching in the Japanese market on December 6, 2007. The U.S. official launch was 7 months later on July 07, 2008. Universal Nissan in Los Angeles provided a customer with the delivery of a new GT-R, fresh from the production line at 12:01 a.m., on July 7, 2008. The Canadian launch was also in July 2008. Europe became the third consumer market, where it launched late in the year. The large disparity in initial marketing between these regional releases is due to Nissan having to build GT-R performance centers where the car is serviced. Also the engine and rear-mounted dual-clutch gearbox are built by hand, thus limiting production to around 1000 cars a month.

Specifications

The Nissan GT-R is powered by the VR38DETT engine, a 3,799 cc (3.8 L; 231.8 cu in) DOHC V6. Two parallel Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) turbochargers provide forced induction. Production vehicles produce a manufacturer-claimed engine output of 480 bhp (360 kW) at 6400 rpm and 434 lb·ft (588 N·m) at 3200-5200 rpm. According to independent dynamometer tests, the GT-R produces 416 hp (310 kW) to 475 hp (354 kW) and 414 lb·ft (561 N·m) to 457 lb·ft (620 N·m) at the wheels. The engine also meets California Air Resources Board Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards. A curb weight of 1,730 kg (3,800 lb) or 1,736 kg (3,830 lb) with side curtain airbags is achieved using a jig welded steel chassis with aluminum used for the hood, trunk, and doors. A rear mounted 6 speed dual clutch semi-automatic transmission is used in conjunction with the ATTESA E-TS system to provide power to all four wheels and along with Nissan’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC-R) aids in stability. Three shift modes can also be selected for various conditions. The drag coefficient is 0.27.

Performance

Nissan claims the GT-R can reach a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h), Motor Trend recorded a top speed of 195.0 mph (313.8 km/h). It has been tested to achieve 0-60 mph (97 km/h) times as low as 3.2 seconds with "launch control" and 3.9 seconds without (improved to 3.5 seconds in models produced since March 2009). Nissan’s chief vehicle engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno has indicated that he has never used the term "launch control", which refers to the act of turning off vehicle dynamic control (VDC) and launch the car at around 4500 rpm. The GT-R user’s manual states that turning off the VDC is only meant for escaping low-traction situations such as mud or snow, and that damage to the transmission is not covered under …

This is my 2002 Renault AVANTIME 2.0 16V TURBO ‘NOIR NOCTURNE’ photographed on our driveway.

No other car in the world has these ingenious doors and I’m sure this feature will be one of the most remembered features of this AVANTGARDE LOOKING FUTURE CLASSIC.

THE AVANTIME HISTORY RETOLD
Renault suffered from over-capacity at their factories, and rather than letting people off, they wanted to take over the manufacture of the hugely successful Espace. So, they made the agreement with Matra that if Matra was given the task of developing this new high-spec topmodel, Renault could bring the Espace production in-house. Since Renault don’t have the knowhow and expertise to produce cars like Matra do, they had to redesign the Espace, making it the conventional steel car we see marketed as "Espace IV". Matra took on the task and they came up with a series of design-ideas, all based on the "Espace III".

The Geneva motor show in March 1999 saw the unveiling of a new Renault concept car – where it was called a "Coupéspace" – which leads the way in opening up a long forgotten niche – that of a luxurious Grand Tourer Coupé with space for four adults to relax in comfort.

In the 1920’s and ’30’s Renault’s main products were luxurious sports models like the 1929 eight-cylinder Reinastella and 1930 Nervastella, driven by Royalty and Europe’s aristocracy. The AVANTIME takes some inspiration from these powerful Grand Tourers, built to cover large distances in great comfort and style, whilst focusing firmly on the future. The AVANTIME, illustrates in a forthright manner Renault’s ability to shape the future of the motor car. The manufacturer is convinced that there is room in the market for a new breed of coupe, targeted at a customer group seeking the visual distinction, rarity and driving enjoyment of a coupe with the luxury of space and comfort found in a large car or monospace, all wrapped up in a vehicle which is technologically advanced and forward looking. Styled by Patrick Le Quément, the AVANTIME was intended to combine the space of an MPV with four-place pillarless qualities of a coupé. Regarding the styling, Thierry Metroz, design project manager, said, "We wanted someone walking around the car to be continually astonished."

You sit high up, with glass all around you. The AVANTIME has no B-pillars – one thing that certainly delayed the project was getting the pillar-less design safety-approved – which adds a roadster feel to it, with windows down.

1975 Ford Pinto Not Yet in Flames

Last Saturday I surprised to see this bright orange 1975 Ford Pinto parked on the street that had not yet been rightfully relegated to the junk heap or gone up in flames.   This dilapidated rusting relic from the quality low point of the American automotive industry had expired Illinois plates.   Interestingly when I was doing a bit of research to date this heap I discovered a photo of this exact car from Gurnee, Illinois in 2008.

I took some shots of this with my Fuji GS645S and Nikon N55 since this was the first test roll of film though this camera and I had no idea yet if it worked.   I am quite pleased with the results from my Thrift Store Pentax.
