1956 Plymouth Savoy

1956 Plymouth Savoy

In the countryside of Niota, Illinois, about a block from my girlfriend’s parent’s farm, there’s a small, lonely wooded area that used to be a homestead. The house, barn, and sheds are all collapsed in on themselves, and the area is littered with old, abandoned cars – most of which are in still good enough condition to be restored, or reborn as hot rods.

Amongst the old, rusting, and forgotten automobiles is this powder-blue 1956 Plymouth Savoy that is literally "wrapped around a tree". The motor was removed a long time ago, allowing enough room for a seed to take root, and an old sturdy tree to flourish where Detroit iron once powered the abandoned Savoy decades ago.

Taken in Niota, Illinois on March 25th, 2009 with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28.

Fisher Body 21

Fisher Body 21

In the early days of automobile manufacturing it was often cheaper to outsource the manufacture of bodies to a separate company, as car bodies were made of wood and metal and thus required skilled tradesmen. Enter Fisher Body, established in 1908, Fisher would go on to become a leading manufacturer of automobile bodies in the early 20th century. By 1917 General Motors outsources all their work to Fisher. To meet the demand Fisher expanded their already vast network of plants. Plant 21, designed by Albert Khan was constructed in 1919 and focused primarily on metal stamping. Post-WW2 the plant constructed components for bus, limos, and ambulances. However when this was moved to Flint, MI the site was shut down in 1984. It operated as an industrial painter from 1990-1993 before that to went bankrupt. Today it sits empty, and remain contaminated despite EPA cleanup from 2004 to 2010.

You are invited to stay and browse through my stream. Here’s a quick index to my little corner of Flickr:

Automobile Photographs
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I’ve photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

The Illinois State Fair
: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I’ve put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man’s first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Dealer

Dealer

A collection of some 200 old cars (mainly Fiat’s) has been found in Kolding, Denmark. Many of the cars have never been sold!!!! Brand new Fiat 127, 128, 131, Ritmo etc.

And here’s the story:

"Jens Sørensen owned a Fiat garage in Kolding, Denmark, and for some reason didn’t resell the cars which he took in part-exchange for new ones between 1973 and 1981.

Then in 1981 he was made to choose by Fiat Denmark whether to run the business as a truck agency or a passenger car franchise. He opted for the trucks, and just left all the passenger cars where they were, including some unsold new models.

Now a descendent of his who appears to be Kjeld, son of Sven Sørensen, finds that he owns about 200 old cars, and has decided to sell most of them. So far this has only been publicised by word-of-mouth. He plans to keep the best examples of each model, but others are for sale, ranging in value from the equivalent of €250 for an accident-damaged Fiat 600 to €6500 for a Lancia Beta with 16,000 km on the clock, which was run as a company car.

There are some second series Fiat 127s with delivery mileage, but it seems that there are problems with cars which were never actually registered when new. These cannot now be put on the road in Denmark because of emissions regulations."
